The alleged theft of a mature white sandalwood tree from the Amrai forest area in Sonegaon has raised fresh concerns about the protection of Nagpur’s rapidly diminishing green spaces. The incident came to light during a morning walk when local residents discovered that a large sandalwood tree had been cut down, leaving behind only its stump.
The discovery has alarmed environmentalists and regular visitors, who fear that valuable trees in the forest may be increasingly vulnerable to timber theft.Sources said this is not an isolated case. Several trees have reportedly been illegally felled and removed from the forest in recent years, underscoring the need for stronger monitoring and enforcement measures. The Sonegaon Amrai forest is already facing multiple environmental challenges, including proposed tree felling for infrastructure projects and growing instances of littering by anti-social elements.
Following complaints from residents, Senior Police Inspector Nitin Magar of Sonegaon Police Station visited the site. While officials did not immediately find evidence of freshly cut trees, an inquiry has been initiated to verify the claims and ascertain the facts. The incident has drawn attention to the continuing illegal trade in sandalwood, a highly valuable timber species. Experts note that despite stricter regulations, the lucrative black market for sandalwood continues to drive thefts and smuggling operations in various parts of the country.
Residents have urged forest and civic authorities to conduct a detailed investigation and strengthen security measures to safeguard the area’s remaining green cover and prevent further loss of valuable trees.
