Commuters using the Besa–Pipla Road are facing mounting difficulties as simultaneous road construction and pipeline-laying work have turned one of the city’s busiest stretches into a congestion hotspot, with motorists raising concerns over safety and poor traffic management.
The ongoing cement road work on the final stretch between Besa Square and Pipla has significantly reduced the available carriageway. At the same time, pipeline-laying work at the busy Besa Square has further narrowed the road, leaving commuters with little room to manoeuvre.
With no effective alternate route, traffic from both directions is being channelled through a limited stretch, resulting in long queues, frequent bottlenecks and minor vehicle collisions. Residents say the reduced road width makes it difficult for two-wheelers, cars, buses and heavy vehicles to pass simultaneously, especially during peak hours.
The condition of the road has worsened due to the ongoing works. Large potholes, uneven surfaces and excavated patches have made commuting hazardous, particularly for two-wheeler riders. Continuous monsoon rains have filled the potholes with water, making it difficult for motorists to judge their depth and increasing the risk of accidents, vehicle damage and traffic disruptions.
Citizens have questioned the planning of the projects, arguing that while infrastructure development is necessary, executing agencies should have assessed the impact on daily commuters before carrying out multiple works simultaneously.
“Proper traffic management plans, clearly marked diversions, temporary alternate routes and phased execution should be made mandatory to minimise disruption,” said commuter Ravi Mehta. He added that where alternate roads are unavailable, authorities should ensure that at least one lane remains safe and motorable throughout the construction period.
Public Works Department (PWD) officials said the projects are being undertaken for long-term public benefit and appealed to citizens to cooperate until the works are completed.
