The long-awaited demand for cab services within the premises of Nagpur Railway Station is finally set to be met, with BharatCabs expected to begin operations from the station’s west-side entrance within the next few days.
The launch had been delayed for several months due to procedural hurdles related to obtaining an aggregator licence, despite the tender being awarded earlier. However, authorities have now provided interim relief by granting BharatCabs a prepaid taxi licence, allowing the service to commence operations.
Confirming the development, Central Railway Nagpur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vinayak Garg said the facility, which passengers had been seeking for a long time, would soon become operational as all major procedural issues have been resolved.
Although BharatCabs is yet to receive an aggregator licence from the State Government, it has been permitted to function as a prepaid taxi operator. The state is currently in the process of framing regulations for issuing aggregator licences, creating a temporary regulatory gap for app-based cab services.
To address the inconvenience faced by railway passengers, the Regional Transport Authority (RTA), headed by the District Collector and comprising the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), approved a prepaid taxi licence for BharatCabs during a meeting held last week.
RTO Kiran Bidkar confirmed that the operator can now provide prepaid taxi services within the railway station premises in accordance with the conditions of the tender agreement.
According to sources, passengers will be able to book rides by scanning a QR code available at the booking counter, eliminating the need to download a separate mobile application. BharatCabs is also reportedly exploring tie-ups with other prepaid taxi operators to increase vehicle availability.
The resumption of organised cab services marks the end of an 18-month gap at Nagpur Railway Station. The last designated cab service operated from the station premises in October 2024. Since then, passengers have largely depended on auto-rickshaws, private pick-ups, or app-based cabs from outside the station area.
Railway and transport authorities expect the new arrangement to significantly improve last-mile connectivity and enhance travel convenience for thousands of passengers using the station every day.
Temporary Parking and Waiting Area
A temporary parking and waiting zone for cabs has been created near the new reservation counters on the station’s west side. The facility can accommodate at least five cabs at a time. A dedicated assistance counter is also being set up to help passengers unfamiliar with online ride-booking platforms and first-time visitors to the city.
