Nagpur’s air connectivity is set to take another hit as Air India and IndiGo have announced additional flight reductions, raising concerns among business travellers and the tourism sector.
From July 1, Air India will discontinue flights AI-415 and AI-416 operating on the Delhi-Nagpur-Delhi route. IndiGo has also withdrawn flights 6E-6003 and 6E-909 on the Bengaluru-Nagpur sector. The latest cuts are part of an ongoing reduction in flight operations on routes connected to Nagpur.
Over the past few months, airlines have scaled back services on several key routes, including Mumbai, Goa, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, which until recently handled nearly 78 flights daily, is now operating only around 50 flights a day, reflecting a sharp decline in connectivity.
Air India, which once operated six flights from Nagpur, now has only two services remaining. Air India Express has also reduced operations on the Nagpur-Bengaluru route. IndiGo has carried out the largest number of cuts, withdrawing nearly 20 flights from its schedule so far. Overall, around 28 flights that previously operated from Nagpur have been discontinued.
Airlines have attributed the reductions to challenges related to Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) availability, rising operational costs and the need to optimise route networks in response to changing market conditions. Industry experts also cite geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which have disrupted supply chains and increased operating costs for airlines globally.
