The government’s decision to introduce E-85 petrol, a fuel blend containing 85% ethanol and priced around Rs 18-20 cheaper than regular petrol, may bring relief to motorists. However, petrol pump dealers have expressed concerns over the lack of necessary infrastructure and the possibility of fuel degradation, which could lead to disputes between customers and pump operators in the future.
Though E-85 petrol is yet to become widely available in Nagpur, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has already made arrangements at four fuel stations in the city — Umred Road, Medical Square, Manewada and Byramji Town. More outlets are expected to start dispensing the fuel soon.
While Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have not yet introduced E-85 petrol at their outlets, the fuel is expected to be made available there in the coming months.
Dealers point out that ethanol-blended fuel is highly sensitive to water contamination. Even a single drop of water entering the fuel can cause the ethanol to separate from the petrol, creating a different mixture that may damage engines or cause vehicles to stop functioning. The risk is particularly high during the monsoon season, especially for two-wheelers.
Another challenge is the fuel’s storage life. If ethanol-blended petrol remains unused in a vehicle or storage tank for several months, it can deteriorate and become unsuitable for use. In such cases, the tank may need to be completely cleaned, potentially resulting in damage to the vehicle and additional expenses.
Industry experts believe that for E-85 fuel to be successfully adopted, a strong supply and storage infrastructure must be established across the entire distribution chain, including retail outlets. They also stress the need for a larger number of E-85-compatible vehicles in the market.
While the move is expected to benefit consumers and support environmental goals, concerns remain that inadequate infrastructure could create operational difficulties for petrol pump operators and inconvenience for vehicle owners.
