Voting for the Nagpur Local Authorities Constituency by-election to the Maharashtra Legislative Council was conducted peacefully on Thursday, recording an impressive voter turnout of 98.44 per cent. Out of 836 eligible electors, 823 exercised their franchise at 14 polling centres across the district, while 13 members did not vote.
The by-election is witnessing a direct contest between BJP candidate Dr. Rajiv Potdar and Indian National Congress candidate Atul Londhe.
According to election authorities, the electorate comprised 836 voters, including 419 men and 417 women. Polling was held from 8 am to 4 pm at 14 designated centres covering municipal corporations, municipal councils, nagar panchayats and local bodies across Nagpur district.
Polling centres were set up at Narkhed, Katol, Kalmeshwar, Savner, Parseoni, Kanhan-Pipri, Ramtek, Mouda, Kamthi, Nagpur City, Wanadongri and Butibori, where elected representatives from respective local authorities cast their votes.
The Election Commission had issued the notification for the by-election on May 25. The last date for filing nominations was June 1, scrutiny of nominations was carried out on June 2, and withdrawal of candidature concluded on June 4.
After the completion of polling, the ballot boxes were sealed and shifted to the strong room established at the Savings Bhavan premises of the Nagpur Collectorate.
Counting of votes will be taken up on June 22 at the same venue, officials said.
