Hope of reviving the long-stalled Futala Musical Fountain project has been rekindled with the arrival of a French technical specialist who has begun a comprehensive inspection of the facility’s key systems. The visit marks a fresh attempt by MahaMetro to bring the ambitious project back on track after nearly two years of inactivity.
French fountain expert Basile, accompanied by a team of technicians, has started an extensive assessment of the installation to evaluate its current condition and identify the measures required to make it operational. The project, once envisioned as a major tourism attraction for Nagpur, has remained incomplete due to a series of technical challenges and delays.
During his stay in the city, Basile will closely examine various components of the fountain, including the electrical network, lighting infrastructure and pumping systems. A major focus of the inspection is the nearly 65-km-long cable network spread across the project site, which controls the synchronised functioning of water jets, lighting displays, music systems and automated operations.
Officials said the technical review will help determine whether the existing infrastructure meets the required standards and identify any defects or shortcomings that may have developed during the prolonged shutdown. The findings are expected to provide clarity on the extent of repairs and upgrades needed before the fountain can be commissioned.
Work on the lighting system has also gathered momentum, with around 250 LED fixtures currently being installed under the expert’s supervision. The lighting arrangement is expected to be one of the key attractions of the fountain, creating dynamic visual effects synchronised with water movements and music.
The pumping system, considered the backbone of the project, is also undergoing detailed scrutiny. During an earlier visit several months ago, Basile had reportedly pointed out multiple technical deficiencies and suggested corrective measures. Officials are now concerned that extended inactivity and exposure to weather conditions may have affected some of the equipment.
The expert is also evaluating newly procured pumps to verify whether they meet operational requirements and can be integrated into the system efficiently.
After completing the inspection, Basile will submit a detailed technical report outlining the repairs, replacements and specialised equipment required to make the fountain fully functional. Based on the report, MahaMetro will initiate the next phase of procurement and restoration work.
Sources indicated that certain critical components may have to be sourced from France, which could influence both project costs and completion timelines. Once the requirements are finalised, the necessary procurement process will be undertaken.
Conceived as a landmark attraction to enhance the appeal of the Futala Lake precinct, the musical fountain project has remained unfinished despite considerable investment and public anticipation. The current inspection is being viewed as a crucial step towards resolving long-standing technical issues and finally bringing the project closer to completion.
For residents who have waited years to see the attraction become operational, the latest developments have raised fresh hopes that the Futala Musical Fountain may soon emerge as one of the city’s signature recreational landmarks.
