The Election Commission is conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) to correct the voter list, already completed in some states and now underway in Maharashtra. In states where it was conducted earlier, lakhs of voters’ names were removed, leaving them unable to vote. Under SIR, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) must visit every household and get an ‘Enumeration Form’ filled. Eight days in, many BLOs still haven’t reached households, raising fears that lakhs of names could be dropped if the process isn’t completed on time.
Nagpur district has 46,38,589 voters, of which mapping is complete for over 32,43,000. Some 4,610 BLOs — mainly teachers, tax inspectors, clerks, anganwadi workers, and ASHA workers — have been appointed. Teachers must do this work after school hours, while anganwadi and ASHA workers, busy with regular duties, have struggled to reach voters. Many BLOs also report being posted to unfamiliar areas, lacking proper address details, raising doubts about accurate, timely completion.
Additional District Election Officer Dr. Rachna Indurkar warned that a list of BLOs failing to complete SIR duties is being compiled, and administration may take action against them when necessary.
