In a significant setback to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), headed by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has ruled that the FDA’s action against Wardha’s historic Goras Bhandar was illegal and directed the authorities to immediately restore the dairy’s suspended licence.
The court held that the action taken on May 31 was not in accordance with the prescribed legal procedure and ordered the administration to reinstate normal operations without delay.
The case arose after the FDA sealed Goras Bhandar, citing unhygienic conditions and suspending its licence before laboratory test reports on seized products were available. Challenging the move, the cooperative argued that the action was arbitrary, lacked due process, and severely impacted hundreds of dairy farmers and thousands of consumers dependent on the institution.
The High Court accepted the challenge, directing immediate restoration of the licence, marking a major legal victory for the century-old dairy cooperative.
