The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Special Education Committee on Monday recommended seeking Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliation for municipal schools and directed the education department to submit a proposal to the State Government.
The decision was taken during a review meeting chaired by Special Education Committee Chairperson Santoshdevi Laddha at the NMC headquarters. Committee members Ram Kumbhalkar, Vaishali Udapurkar and Syed Muskan Syed Irfan, Education Officer Vandana Mahajan, Deputy Education Officers Subhash Upase and Seema Khobragade, School Inspectors Prashant Tembhurne, Anjum Ara, Shagufta Parveen and Vijay Soni, Samagra Shiksha Assistant Programme Officer Kavita Shaikh, Vinay Bagle and other officials attended the meeting.
The committee reviewed the functioning of the education department, including teacher recruitment, infrastructure and student welfare measures. Officials informed the committee that 92 contractual teachers had joined municipal schools from June 27. Laddha directed the department to complete the recruitment of the remaining contractual teachers at the earliest to address the shortage of teaching staff.
Reviewing the supply of textbooks and uniforms, officials informed the committee that all students enrolled in NMC schools had received them. The Chairperson also instructed the department to prepare a proposal for conducting special coaching classes for Class X students with the assistance of voluntary organisations to improve academic outcomes.
The committee further directed officials to submit a proposal for starting a junior college at the PM SHRI School in Sanjay Nagar. As part of efforts to improve school infrastructure, Laddha instructed the department to provide sloping roof sheets and craft materials for kindergarten and primary sections. She also proposed beautifying 21 municipal schools with murals and educational paintings to create a more appealing learning environment.
The committee recommended that Vande Mataram be sung during the morning assembly in all municipal schools. It also proposed organising multiplication table memorisation competitions during Shikshanotsav, with prizes for students who excel. Among the other proposals discussed were renaming municipal balwadi schools as ‘Bal Gokulam’ and opening two English-medium municipal schools in each Assembly constituency.
The committee also reviewed plans to transform 21 semi-English municipal schools into modern educational institutions equipped with smart classrooms, advanced science laboratories, computer labs and other facilities aimed at improving the quality of education in civic schools.
