The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Monday approved its Rs 6,202.99-crore Budget for 2026-27 after a marathon 12-hour debate, with the General Body clearing several key amendments, including a substantial hike in the annual development fund for corporators.
The budget was passed following discussions involving members of the ruling alliance, the Opposition and the AIMIM-IUML alliance during a meeting held at Kavivarya Suresh Bhat Sabhagruha in Reshimbagh. The session began around 11 am and concluded close to 10 pm.
One of the major decisions was to increase the annual corporators’ development fund to Rs 35 lakh per corporator. The House also approved the creation of a Rs 20-crore Mayor’s Fund and a Rs 10-crore Deputy Mayor’s Fund to support development works across the city.
The budget, presented on Saturday by Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, has a total outlay of Rs 6,202.99 crore, nearly Rs 500 crore higher than the budget initially proposed by the Municipal Commissioner.
Ruling Party Leader Narendra Borkar, who moved the amendments, said the revised budget aims to accelerate Nagpur’s development while addressing citizens’ needs. He also proposed increasing the Transport Committee’s allocation to Rs 200 crore and setting up an e-Library at Garoba Maidan in East Nagpur. To improve civic infrastructure, Borkar announced that the NMC plans to procure one suction-cum-jetting machine for each of its 10 zones to tackle recurring sewer and drainage blockages, particularly in slum areas.
Replying to the discussion, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare said the civic administration would focus on strengthening internal revenue generation. She announced that tax inspectors would be equipped with Point-of-Sale (POS) machines to enable on-the-spot digital collection of property tax and improve revenue efficiency.
Leader of Opposition Sanjay Mahakalkar welcomed several development initiatives but questioned the corporation’s ability to finance them. He said the ambitious budget continues to depend heavily on financial assistance from the state government, raising concerns over the timely execution of proposed projects.
During the meeting, Mayor Neeta Thakre directed civic officials to expedite compensation for the family of a man who died in the recent wall collapse near Geetanjali Square. The issue was raised by Congress corporator Abhijeet Jha. With the budget’s approval, the NMC has finalised its financial roadmap for 2026-27, prioritising infrastructure development, improved civic services, stronger revenue collection and enhanced financial support for local development works.
