A major road connecting Wardha Road with the former Shivangaon village, the CRPF campus and Isasani will be permanently closed from today, affecting hundreds of daily commuters who will now have to take longer routes.
A public notice put up near the taxiway crossing leading to the MRO facility at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport states that the road will remain permanently closed from June 30. Though the notice does not mention the reason, the closure is believed to be linked to the airport’s expansion and redevelopment after the GMR Group recently took over its management under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The road has been an important shortcut for residents of Isasani, Jaitala, Hingna and nearby areas travelling to Wardha Road. It helped commuters avoid longer city routes, saving both travel time and fuel.
The road passes through land that is part of the airport estate, where GMR has proposed a large-scale redevelopment project under its master plan extending to 2034. The project includes expansion of passenger facilities, construction of a new integrated terminal, additional aircraft parking bays, new taxiways and a second runway to increase the airport’s capacity.
GMR officially took over the airport’s management and development rights last week for the next 30 years. The company has announced a phased modernisation plan, with the first phase involving renovation of the existing terminal within a year, followed by the construction of a new integrated terminal.
