To reduce congestion outside the busy west entrance of Nagpur Railway Station, Central Railway’s Nagpur Division has introduced an access control system from Wednesday. Similar to airport drop-off zones, the new system allows private two-wheelers and four-wheelers to stay in the circulating area free of charge for up to 12 minutes. Commercial vehicles will be charged Rs 50.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Aman Mittal said the initiative aims to ease traffic congestion, especially during peak morning and evening hours when many people wait outside the station to receive passengers.
After the free 12-minute period, private two-wheelers will be charged Rs 25 and four-wheelers Rs 50 for parking up to 30 minutes. Commercial vehicles will have to pay Rs 100. Parking charges will increase further for longer durations, with private vehicles attracting higher fees beyond 30 minutes.
Commercial vehicles engaged in transport services are not allowed to park in the circulating area. Private vehicles can park for a maximum of one hour, after which they are liable to be towed. Owners will have to pay a Rs 1,000 fine to get the vehicle released.
The circulating area has three lanes. Two lanes will remain open for public use, while the lane closest to the station building has been reserved for emergency and official vehicles.
The system is integrated with FASTag, enabling automatic and transparent collection of parking charges. It also allows commercial vehicles, including cabs and auto-rickshaws, to pick up passengers from the station porch. A dedicated prepaid taxi booking kiosk will also be set up outside the heritage building for passengers’ convenience.
Travellers who need to park for longer durations can use the designated parking facilities available within the railway station campus.
