A family in Parshivani, Nagpur district, has decided to build a memorial for their pet parrot, TT, who was part of the household for 27 years, after giving the bird full last rites following its death last week.
TT came into the care of Prashant Surajlal Rajat’s family on March 10, 1999, after being found in distress and brought home by Prashant’s father. Over the years, the parrot became an inseparable part of the family rather than just a pet.
Prashant, a software engineer based in Pune, rushed back to Parshivani with his wife Nandini on a 13-hour journey after learning on June 27 that TT’s health had suddenly deteriorated. The parrot passed away the following day, June 28.
The family performed full last rites for TT, with all members present. Relatives recall the parrot as unusually intelligent — it sat with the family at mealtimes, mimicked words, and moved freely around the house. The family has now decided to build a smritisthal (memorial) to preserve TT’s memory, saying the loss felt like losing a family member.
