The Middle East witnessed a fresh escalation after Iran launched retaliatory strikes following US military attacks, with explosions reported in Doha (Qatar), the UAE, and Bahrain, while Jordan also activated air raid alerts.
The latest conflict began after the United States carried out a new wave of strikes on Iran, accusing Tehran of attacking a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway has since been closed by Iran, raising concerns over global oil and gas supplies.
Explosions and missile alerts across the Gulf
Explosions were reported in Qatar’s capital Doha, while missile alerts were issued in Qatar, Bahrain, and Jordan. Qatar’s military said it intercepted incoming Iranian missiles.
The United Arab Emirates also warned residents about possible missile and drone attacks, although officials did not immediately confirm the exact targets. Bahrain, home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet, also activated air defence systems.
US-Iran conflict deepens
The US said it carried out strikes after Iran attacked a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz, setting it on fire and forcing its crew to abandon the vessel.
US President Donald Trump said hopes for an interim agreement with Iran were over, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Iran would “pay” for its actions.
Ship attacked in Strait of Hormuz
A Cyprus-flagged container ship was hit in the Strait of Hormuz, suffering major engine room damage. The crew abandoned the burning vessel, and one civilian crew member was reported missing.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed several ships had ignored its navigation instructions and said one vessel was struck after failing to follow the approved route.
Iran closes Strait of Hormuz
Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until further notice and warned it could target more US-linked military bases in the region if further attacks occur.
The latest exchange has heightened fears of a wider regional conflict and renewed concerns over disruptions to global energy supplies.
