A 30-year-old woman from Balaghat district, Madhya Pradesh, received successful treatment at 1020 bedded Shalinitai Meghe Hospital and Research Centre (SMHRC) for a long-standing swelling in the left submandibular region that had persisted for nearly six years. Despite consulting multiple hospitals and undergoing Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) at a local healthcare facility, she had been unable to obtain definitive treatment.
Upon presentation at SMHRC, the patient was evaluated by Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar, Head of the Department of Surgery. Following a detailed clinical assessment and necessary investigations, the swelling was diagnosed as non-cancerous, and surgical excision was recommended.
Dr. Vandana Tomey, Professor, Department of Surgery, explained that the case was particularly challenging due to the large size of the swelling and its close proximity to vital neck structures, including the carotid artery. The surgery required meticulous planning, precise dissection, and exceptional surgical expertise to ensure complete removal while preserving surrounding structures.
The procedure was successfully performed by Dr. Vandana Tomey under the guidance of Dr. Rajiv Sonarkar. The swelling was completely excised without complications, highlighting the team’s expertise in managing complex head and neck surgical cases.

Dr. Vasant Gawande, CMS, SMHRC, informed that the surgery was performed under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). Seamless coordination by Mr. Ahmindra Jain, under the supervision of Dr. Sudhir Singh, AMS, enabled the patient to receive advanced surgical care without any financial burden.
