Teachers Stage a Protest by Wearing a Black Band on Their Arms

An age-old issue of school teachers, being threatened and making them fall into fake promises by the State Government to provide them with enough of the financial aid, is now being taken seriously on this Teachers Day. School teachers from various educational institutes showed up to work today wearing a black band on their arms, in a protest against the neglected promises made by the state government.

This protest is being held on the Teachers day with a strong message that revolves around the lathicharge attack on the protesting teachers of Mumbai which took place a few days back, said Nago Ganar MLC of teacher’s constituency. He also added, “A similar incident took place two years back in Aurangabad. If this is how a teacher is treated by the government, there is no point at all in celebrating our work and our identity.”

On this Teachers Day, Nagpur District Education Coordination Committee (NDECC) which is an umbrella organization of teachers and school associations, had given orders to all of its members, to boycott all the official Teachers Day celebration events. Similarly, NDECC has also informed its members to show up on work wearing a black armband.

In the year 2016, the government had promised to increase a 20% grant and to raise it till a subsequent and full funding level. This financial support was provided to a few of the schools, in which the raise was even increased to 40% but many of the educational institutes are remaining and have not received any raise during this period of three years.

The state government is seen making false promises especially when it comes to providing financial aid to schools, as the salaries of teachers are cleared by the state government.

Kishore Masurkar, head of NDECC had written a letter to Education Minister Ashish Shelar, reminding him of the remaining schools that need to be looked after. But even after days of sending the letter, members of NDECC are not getting any positive response.

Following which, Masurkar decided to protest openly on Teachers Day.
