Recently the civic body has taken many measures to protect the city lakes during the Visarjaan of Lord Ganesha. The NMC had proper arrangements to protect the lakes from getting polluted and a strict schedule and rules were made followed to the citizens coming to immerse their idols.
However, the NMC has not followed the same or rather ignored during the Navratri. There are no barricades around lakes to protect them from the idols that are to be immersed. And the city’s well known lake, Telangkhedi Lake is totally damaged due to the Nirmalya and other artificial items such as thermocol (polystyrene) artifacts and many toxic materials.
Even though the many of the city’s Non-Governmental Organizations like Green Vigil Foundation, Rotary Club of Nagpur, Swach Nagpur and others were present at the immersion sites, the devotees were seen polluting the lakes.
“We have been able convince devotees on ghat visarjan and 352 ghats were immersed in single artificial tank installed at Futala lake. Eight mini truckloads of Nirmalya was collected by team Green Vigil at Telankhedi Lake during the two day visarjan†said Kaustubh Chattergee of NGO, Green Vigil Foundation.
He further talk about the scientific details on the effects of lake pollution “Ghat contains oil, which floats on the surface of lake water and restricts atmospheric diffusion of oxygen in lake resulting in  dropping of Dissolved oxygen level of lake waterâ€. He added.
