Mahavitran takes action against 1,376 consumers for meter tampering

Mahavitaran has taken action against a total of 1,376 consumers in the last one year fo electricity tampering. In an attempt to stop this theft around 2.5 crore has been recovered as fine from these people. Also, criminal cases have been registered.

It is clear from the action of Mahavitaran that most of the consumers were using magnets or chips to tamper with speed of the meter. At some places the use of remote was also seen.

MSEDCL in the last three years has taken action against 4,270 consumers in the company’s Nagpur circle. In the year 2108-19, total 1,446 consumers faced action by the MSEDCL. Total 299.91 lakh fine was recovered.

Similarly, 249.76 lakh fine was recovered from 1448 consumers in 2019-20. While fine worth 176.38 lakh from 915 customers was recovered in 2020-21.

Since March 2021, 461 customers have been caught while tampering with the power meters. Again, 84.2 lakhs were recovered from them. Chief engineer of

Mahavitaran, Dilip Dodke, clearly said that the meters are being closely moni tored. Youth should not do any illegal act to avoid police action. Meter tam pering is a major offense under the Electricity Act. Criminal case is registered under section-135 in this matter. There is a provi sion of imprisonment of up to 3 years on conviction of the offence. Such con sumers are charged double the bill as compared to meter reading.
