Exclusive: Facilities for sports persons should be created in Nagpur: Dr B B Taywade

“The sportspersons are more interested in events and not in the prize money. Facilities for them must be made available. I was interested in sports and fortunately got opportunities to organizes grounds and funds for them from various sources”,  Dr Babanrao Taywade stated, while talking t The Live Nagpur.

D Taywade is being honoured with ‘Krida Maharshi’ award under Khasrad Krida Mahotsav on Saturday evening. The award will be conferred at the hands of former Cricket legend Kapil Dev, at Yeshvantrao Stadium, Dhantoli, on Saturday evening. The unique sports event was held under the patronage of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Dr Taywade said that he was interested in Kabaddi when he was a student. Being a child from a poor family, Kabaddi was a game which was cheaper and popular in rural areas. He also played Kho Kho and later handball. After he became Principal of Dhanwate National College, Nagpur, in the year 2000 he could generate funds for promoting the sports events. The most advanced facilities for the sports persons are still available at Dhanwate National College, including those for badminton, basketball, chess, table tennis, hockey, football and cricket. Most of the facilities for most of these events are available for the city, state , national and international events here.

Dr Taywade stated that the facilities are provided for sports associations, which helps in developing sports persons of higher grades.

With love and passion for sports, he held the position of Presidents of several sports organisations/ associations like Handball, Athletics, Atya Patya etc. Winner of the prestigious Chhatrapati Award Dr Taywade said that the sports persons are more interested in conducting events and not money involved in prizes. “they need proper guidance, nutrition and proper sports facilities’ ‘, he added. This is being provided for them at Dhanwate National College and his own college at Koradi, near Nagpur.

For various reasons the Nagpur University had withdrawn inter-university sports events and Dr Tawvade started state-level competitions in sic events under Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh National  Sports Competition. The events received an enthusiastic response.

Dr Taywade was Head of the RTM Nagpur University’s Sports and Cultural Committee for about ten years. He was instrumental in developing the sports arena of the University at Ravi Nagar. The synthetic track, Gymnaecisum, ground for Basket Ball etc at the University ground is because of Dr Taywade’s initiative.

With the help of authorities in Nagpur Municipal Corporation, he could dedicate many sports grounds to association of sports. The ground at Pawanbhoomi, near his house is his creation.

Dr Taywade stated that he could generate funds for the International Marathon in Nagpur with the help of former Union Minister Vilas Muttemwar and NMC. The event, which required about Rs 4 crore,  unfortunately was stopped for political reasons. He expressed his wish to restart the event which attracts athletes from across the world.

Besides the local sports persons, the facilities at Nagpur and Koradi are available for sports persons from all over India. Many of them come at Koradi for practice sessions. The facilities are of international level.

A huge fan of Dr Taywade congratulated him on phone and reached his residence on Saturday morning.
