Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) is preparing to install a new traffic signal system. The Rs 5.36 crore project will be implemented in the city by the Smart City Company before May 2023.

According to a media report, NSSCDCL Chief Executive Officer Chinmay Gotmare stated that the project will upgrade signals at 33 junctions on two major stretches – Wardha Road and Central Avenue.

According to a study conducted by NMC’s Traffic Department, Metro pillars obscure the view of 25 signals from Automotive Square to the Airport T-Point. Similarly, the view of 30 traffic signals on the east-west corridor was found to be obstructed. The traffic police had also stated that many Metro pillars, including those at Munje Square, Variety Square, and Dhantoli Square, had become obstacles, making the area prone to accidents. Metro Rail pillars and stairways take up a lot of space on the road.

The NSSCDCL has decided to replace traffic signals from Airport T-Point Samvidhan Square. Similarly, on Centr Avenue, it will replace traffic signals wit cantilever type signals between Samvidhain Square and Pardi Square, said Gotmar adding these signals will also have timers.

The Smart City Company plans to invest Rs 5.36 crore. The project was launched with two goals in mind: to improve mobility and to prevent motorists from leaving their engines running at intersections.

The visibility of traffic signals is currently hampered by pillars and tree branches. Existing traffic signals will benefit from the inverted L-shaped cantilever signals. The signals will be replaced by Onnyx Electronics Private Limited.

According to Gotmare, the new signalling poles will be erected while keeping proper road heights in mind so that heavy vehicle movement is not hampered. Meanwhile, the NMC Electric Department has installed two new traffic signals at the NEERI T-Point and the junction before the Narendra Nagar Railway Under-bridge.
