On Tuesday, Union Minister of Textiles Piyush Goyal said that India would soon have its own set of sizes for apparels and footwear. The process to create the same has been undergoing for the last few years and will be implemented anytime soon.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) conducted a comprehensive study that spanned several years, including research conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal praised the commendable work carried out by NIFT, stating that the finishing touches are underway and the new size standards will be implemented soon. The study involved measuring the body dimensions of 25,000 individuals across various cities in India through the use of 3D body scanners.
The findings of this anthropometric research are expected to have wide-ranging implications for the apparel industry and sectors such as automotive, aerospace, fitness, and gaming, enabling the development of ergonomically designed products tailored to the Indian population. Additionally, the Bureau of Indian Standards has conducted a similar study in collaboration with the Central Leather Research Institute, focusing on establishing a standardized size system for shoes.
