The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has announced plans to construct a 104-kilometre access-controlled expressway that will link the under-construction Vadhvan Port in Palghar district with the Mumbai–Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg at Bharvir, near Igatpuri.
Currently, the project is in its preliminary phase. “We have submitted the alignment proposal to the state government. Once approval is granted, the land acquisition process will begin,” said a senior MSRDC official. He further stated that tenders for construction will be floated only after significant progress is made on the Vadhvan Port development.
Dedicated Greenfield Corridor for Faster Connectivity
The proposed expressway will start from Bharvir Khurd near Igatpuri and extend to Tawa village near Charoti, connecting with National Highway 48. From there, a separate stretch leading up to Vadhvan Port will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Freight Travel Time to Reduce Significantly
Officials believe this expressway will drastically cut travel time for freight movement between central Maharashtra and the west coast. The new route is expected to reduce the journey between Igatpuri and Vadhvan Port to just 1 hour and 15 minutes, offering an alternative to Mumbai’s heavily congested roads.
Strategic Value May Rise with Proposed Airport
In addition to improving logistics and infrastructure, the project could hold strategic importance. The government is reportedly evaluating the possibility of developing a greenfield airport near the planned deep-sea port, further enhancing the region’s connectivity and growth potential.
