After months of protests by students, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University has finally taken a decision on the long-pending demand for the “Carry On” scheme. The Academic Council voted in favor of the students, with 21 votes against 3, allowing the implementation of the “Carry On” system for this year. However, the decision is valid only for the current academic session, and the scheme will not continue in the next session.
Students have been staging protests for months, demanding the “Carry On” facility to avoid losing a year due to incomplete results. As per the 2024-25 regulations, students who fail to clear certain subjects would otherwise lose an academic year. Responding to the growing concerns, the university issued a circular on 29 August 2024, offering additional opportunities to appear for exams. However, the notice did not clarify the full implementation of the “Carry On” scheme, creating confusion and stress for students.
Thousands of students have been repeatedly submitting applications to avail the “Carry On” benefit. Various student organizations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Vidyarthi Sanghatana, NSUI, and Yuva Sena, have supported the students and staged protests to press for this demand.
Earlier, the Academic Council had opposed the scheme, citing that it would compromise academic quality. However, after continuous student protests and the intervention of organizations, the proposal was reconsidered. Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr. Madhavi Khode-Chavre forwarded the matter back to the Academic Council for re-evaluation, resulting in the temporary approval for this academic year.
This decision provides immediate relief to students but makes it clear that such concessions will not be available in the next academic session.
