The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has announced a major overhaul of the State Services Main Examination pattern, abolishing optional subjects from the 2027 examination cycle. The Commission has also fixed the interview at 175 marks under the revised evaluation system.
As per the new pattern, the Main Examination will consist of seven compulsory papers—two qualifying language papers (Marathi and English), one Essay paper and four General Studies papers.
Candidates must secure a minimum of 25 per cent marks in each of the Marathi and English language papers to qualify. However, the marks obtained in these two papers will not be included in the final merit list.
With the removal of the two optional subject papers, the written examination will now carry 1,250 marks, comprising the Essay paper and four General Studies papers. The personality test, or interview, will carry 175 marks, a revision aimed at maintaining an appropriate balance between the written examination and interview, in line with Supreme Court guidelines.
The revised examination pattern will be implemented from the MPSC State Services Main Examination-2027. The Commission said the detailed syllabus and examination scheme will be released separately on its official website.
