A routine security check at Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday led to the arrest of a newly appointed jail constable after authorities allegedly recovered narcotics and other prohibited items concealed on his person before he entered the prison premises.
The accused, Vikas Sahare, had joined the prison department last year and was recently posted to the Central Jail after completing his training. He was stopped at the main entrance while reporting for duty, where all staff members are subjected to mandatory frisking.
During the inspection, security personnel allegedly found a packet hidden inside his undergarments. The packet contained 39 grams of charas, five narcotic tablets, and five surgical blades, all of which were seized on the spot. Jail officials immediately informed Dhantoli Police, who took the constable into custody.
A case has been registered against Sahare under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway.
Police are now probing the motive behind the alleged smuggling attempt and trying to identify the intended recipients of the contraband. Investigators suspect the possibility of a wider network and are examining whether the accused had assistance from inmates or outside contacts.
To trace the source of the seized narcotics and establish possible links, police will analyse the constable’s mobile phone records, Call Detail Records (CDR) and bank transactions. Officials believe the digital and financial evidence may reveal whether the smuggling was carried out in exchange for money and if others were involved.
The incident has once again raised questions over security inside Nagpur Central Jail, where similar NDPS-related cases involving jail personnel have surfaced in the past. Police are expected to investigate whether this case has any connection with earlier incidents.
