Jai Sai Welfare Foundation is set to host the inaugural Open Rapid Chess Tournament in Nagpur, scheduled to commence on July 20. This event marks a historic occasion for the city as it introduces a non-rating chess tournament featuring a substantial cash prize.
Organised under the guidance of Tournament Organising Secretary Sushant Jumde, the event will take place at Dr Hedgewar Smarak Samiti, Reshimbagh, and is officially recognised by the Chess Association Nagpur (CAN). The tournament will kick off with an inaugural function at 09:30 am, followed immediately by the first round.
A total cash prize pool of Rs 1,21,000 awaits participants, with awards distributed across various categories and age groups. Notably, participants in the U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories will vie for 24 cash prizes and 64 trophies. The overall winner of the tournament will secure Rs 21,000 along with a prestigious trophy, while the runner-up and second runner-up will receive Rs 14,000 and Rs 11,000 respectively. Additionally, the fourth and fifth place finishers will pocket Rs 10,000 and Rs 9,000 each, along with trophies.
In addition to these prizes, there are rewards for top performers in various other categories including open cash prizes, veteran players, and school trophies. A special lucky draw for a bicycle will also add to the excitement of the event.
The tournament will adhere to the latest FIDE laws of chess and will be conducted using the FIDE Swiss System across nine rounds, ensuring a fair and competitive environment for all participants.
