Employees of the Motor Vehicle Department (RTO) statewide have announced an indefinite strike beginning September 24. Their action stems from the government’s failure to implement a revised promotion scheme, which was approved on September 23, 2022, after six years of efforts by employee unions. Despite this approval, the scheme has not been fully enacted, resulting in a halt to promotions. The strike is driven by the demand for promotions to positions such as chief producer, junior accounts examiner, and deputy accountant.
The striking employees claim that the delay in implementing the revised promotion scheme has significantly impacted their morale, leading to widespread discontent. Gajanan Rathod, Joint Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Department Employees Union (Nagpur City Division), highlighted that the government’s inaction over the past two years has compelled employees to take this drastic measure. Additionally, recent transfers within the revenue department on August 31, 2024, have exacerbated dissatisfaction among staff. The strike is anticipated to disrupt daily operations at regional and sub-regional transport offices, with no resolution in sight unless the state addresses their demands.
