In a significant move to promote renewable energy, Maharashtra’s Mahavitaran will provide free net meters to consumers installing solar panels under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, announced Mahavitaran Chairman and Managing Director Lokesh Chandra. The initiative aims to make solar energy more accessible and affordable for domestic consumers.
Under the scheme, households can receive up to 300 units of free electricity per month by installing rooftop solar panels, which are available at subsidized rates from the government. Consumers can also earn by selling surplus electricity generated by their solar panels back to Mahavitaran.
Previously, consumers were required to purchase net meters to track excess electricity production and sales. Now, Mahavitaran will supply these meters at no cost, simplifying the process and reducing initial expenses. The meters will also assist users in monitoring their electricity consumption to stay within the 300-unit threshold to qualify for free electricity.
As of now, over 3.23 lakh consumers in Maharashtra have applied to avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme.
Consumers interested in the initiative can access more information through Mahavitaran’s official website (https://www.mahadiscom.in/), its mobile app, or by visiting their nearest Mahavitaran office. Details are also available on the scheme’s official website, www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
