Meerut: Travel booking giant OYO has introduced a revised check-in policy for its partner hotels in Meerut, effective immediately, prohibiting unmarried couples from booking accommodations. As per the new guidelines, couples will be required to present valid proof of their relationship at the time of check-in, even for online bookings.
OYO has granted its partner hotels the discretion to decline couple bookings based on their judgment, in alignment with local social norms, the company said in a statement.
The decision follows feedback from civil society groups and local residents in Meerut urging stricter measures. “We have received requests from civil society groups and residents in Meerut and other cities to address this matter. Based on the response, we may consider expanding the policy to other locations,” sources familiar with the policy change stated.
Speaking about the move, Pawas Sharma, Region Head, OYO North India, said, “OYO is committed to promoting safe and responsible hospitality practices. While we respect individual freedoms and personal liberty, we also acknowledge our duty to collaborate with law enforcement and civil society groups in the markets we operate in. We will periodically review this policy and its impact.”
This initiative is part of OYO’s broader effort to rebrand itself as a safe and reliable hospitality provider for families, students, business professionals, religious groups, and solo travelers. The company aims to boost customer trust and loyalty by encouraging longer stays and repeat bookings.
OYO has also launched nationwide programs to ensure safe hospitality, including joint seminars with police and hotel partners, blacklisting properties involved in immoral activities, and taking action against unauthorized use of its branding.
