Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has introduced the Abhay Yojana, an amnesty scheme for property tax and water tax defaulters, offering relief while aiming to boost the civic body’s revenue. However, the scheme has also turned into a political tool as municipal election hopefuls use it to engage with voters.
BJP aspirants have erected hoardings across the city, encouraging defaulters to clear their dues under the scheme. Congress, BSP, and other party candidates have followed suit, promoting the initiative through banners and posters, sparking debate about whether these efforts will convert into electoral success.
With Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior leaders urging party workers to prepare for the upcoming municipal elections, political activity in the city has gained momentum. NMC has been under administrative rule since March 2022 due to delayed elections following multiple reservation draws and boundary changes. Many former corporators have faced challenges in maintaining their public presence during this time.
