Mumbai: In a bid to tackle the rising incidents of crimes involving fake or altered vehicle license plates, the Maharashtra Transport Department has made it mandatory for all vehicles in the state to install High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP). The move aims to prevent tampering, reduce the use of counterfeit plates, and enhance vehicle identification during criminal investigations and routine checks.
Under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, this directive is particularly focused on vehicles registered before 2019. The tamper-proof plates are embossed with the vehicle registration number, feature the ‘IND’ logo in blue, and include a chrome hologram of the Ashoka Chakra, making them highly secure and easy to verify.
Rollout of HSRP Initiative
The installation of HSRP plates began on January 7, and within just two days, approximately 10,000 vehicles were fitted with these plates. The government plans to install HSRP plates on about 1.25 crore pre-2019 vehicles across the state by March 31, 2025.
To streamline the process, the state has divided the initiative into three zones:
- Zone 1: 12 RTO offices
- Zone 2: 16 RTO offices
- Zone 3: 27 RTO offices
Agencies appointed for each zone are tasked with completing the installation within the set deadline.
How to Apply for HSRP Plates
Vehicle owners must book an appointment for HSRP installation via the official website: maharashtrahsrp.com. The portal allows users to select a convenient date, time, and location for installation.
HSRP Plate Costs (Excluding GST)
- Bike: ₹450
- Three-Wheeler: ₹500
- Car: ₹750
- Tractor: ₹450
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Vehicles without HSRP plates after March 31, 2025, will face penalties, and legal action will be taken against the owners.
This initiative not only improves road safety but also aids law enforcement in preventing crimes involving vehicles, ensuring a more secure environment for Maharashtra’s citizens. Vehicle owners are urged to comply with the mandate and support the government’s efforts to enhance safety and security.
