In a significant operation, the Crime Branch Unit 3 of Nagpur Police cracked down on an illegal betting racket during the India vs England One Day International (ODI) cricket match here, on Thursday. The raid, conducted within the jurisdiction of Beltarodi Police Station, led to the apprehension of three individuals and the seizure of betting materials worth ₹2,51,300.
The accused were identified as Akash Mahesh Hinduja (30) from Kali Nagar, Raipur, Chhattisgarh; Narayan Kumar Nandkishore Gound (22) from Ward No. 6, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh; and Abid Sheikh Akalim Sheikh (21) from Civil Lines, Ravi Nagar, Ambazari, Nagpur.
Based on a tip-off from an informant, the police raided the location and caught the accused red-handed while placing bets on the cricket match for financial gain. A detailed search resulted in the recovery of two laptops (HP and ASUS) valued at ₹90,000, UCN broadband equipment worth ₹10,000, nine multimedia mobile phones worth ₹1,50,000, two laptop chargers valued at ₹1,000, and one Casio calculator worth ₹300.
Following the operation, the accused and the seized items were handed over to Beltarodi Police Station. Legal proceedings were initiated under Sections 4 and 5 of the Maharashtra Gambling Act.
