India holds the unfortunate title of being the road accident capital of the world. To curb reckless driving and enhance road safety, Maharashtra authorities have implemented stricter traffic penalties, effective March 1, 2025. The revised fines target key violations such as drunken driving, riding without a helmet, and reckless driving, aiming to enforce stricter compliance with road laws.
If you thought a hangover was the worst consequence of drunken driving, think again. Under the new rules, getting caught driving under the influence will now result in a Rs 10,000 fine and up to six months in jail. Repeat offenders will face even harsher penalties – a Rs 15,000 fine and up to two years behind bars.
Other major traffic violations have also seen a steep hike in penalties. Here is the full list of updated fines under the new regulations:

Authorities hope that these stringent measures will serve as a strong deterrent, reducing accidents and ensuring safer roads across Maharashtra.
