Maharashtra Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse announced on Thursday that the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) system will be implemented in government schools across the state starting from the 2025-26 academic year. He also confirmed that CBSE textbooks in Marathi will be made available by April 1.
The Education Department has directed schools under the State Education Boards to implement the CBSE curriculum, Maharashtra Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse informed the Legislative Council on Thursday. The Minister was responding to a query raised by BJP legislator Prasad Lad, who asked whether the Steering Committee had approved the CBSE curriculum plan, particularly in light of the ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy for schools from classes 3 to 12 in the state.
“CBSE pattern will be implemented from the academic year 2025-2026 and the government has taken this decision with an aim of improving the quality of students in the state,” said the minister. His announcement comes days after the Steering Committee had approved the State Curriculum Framework in relation to the School Education Department.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently reviewed the progress of all departments, including the School Education Department, for the next 100 days. During the meeting, he expressed confidence that Maharashtra would once again lead in the field of school education. The Chief Minister instructed the Education Department to take necessary steps to ensure quality education and directed the School Education Department to implement the CBSE curriculum in state government schools, making the required changes for its adoption.
In a written response to the Legislative Council, School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse stated that the decision aims to standardize education in the state and align it with national standards as per the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The transition to the new system will occur in phases, starting with Classes 1, 3, 5, 8, and 11 in the first phase. Minister Bhuse further explained that while most elements of the CBSE curriculum have been finalized, discussions are still ongoing for its full-scale implementation. The goal is to provide students with a modern, flexible, and skill-oriented learning experience.
The CBSE curriculum follows the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to transform the education system through the 5+3+3+4 structure. This framework divides education into foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary levels, strengthening early childhood education and promoting holistic learning. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, moving away from rote learning.
NEP also introduces greater flexibility in subject choices, allowing students to explore interests across different streams. It prioritizes multilingual education and implements continuous assessments to track student progress. This new approach aims to bring Indian education up to global standards, improving student performance in both higher education and competitive exams.
To facilitate a smooth transition, the Maharashtra government will provide teacher training and new learning materials aligned with the CBSE pattern. Special focus will be given to ensuring that teachers are equipped to handle the new syllabus and adapt to modern teaching methodologies. Regular evaluations will be conducted to monitor the effectiveness of the reforms and address any learning gaps that may arise.
Impact on Students:
The shift to the CBSE curriculum will provide students with a more standardized learning experience. Focused on skill-based education and flexible subject choices, it will better prepare students for higher education and career opportunities. Alignment with CBSE standards will also improve performance in national exams, opening up greater academic and professional prospects.
