As temperatures soar, the use of air coolers has surged across households. However, improper usage of these appliances can pose serious safety risks, warns the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The power utility has urged citizens to follow essential precautions to prevent electrical hazards.
Key Safety Guidelines Issued by MSEDCL:
- Check Earthing: Before connecting an air cooler, ensure that the house’s earthing system is properly checked by an authorized electrician. Faulty earthing increases the risk of electric shocks.
- Use Proper Electrical Connections: Always use a three-pin plug for the cooler and have its wiring inspected by a certified professional.
- Choose ISI-Certified Coolers: Avoid using non-ISI-marked coolers, as they may pose electrical hazards.
- Install an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB): An ELCB can instantly cut off power in case of an electric shock, potentially saving lives.
- Handle with Dry Hands: Never touch the cooler with wet hands, and ensure that no water spills outside the tank while refilling.
- Turn Off Power Before Refilling: Always switch off the cooler and unplug it before adding water. Ensure that the wire is not submerged in water.
Report Electrical Accidents Immediately
In case of any electrical accidents related to coolers, residents should immediately report them to Mahavitaran’s toll-free helplines: 1912, 19120, 1800-212-3435, or 1800-233-3435, or visit the nearest Mahavitaran office.
MSEDCL has emphasized the importance of adhering to these precautions to ensure safety and prevent potential life-threatening incidents.
