A spate of temple thefts in Nagpur has raised concerns about the security of religious sites, with three incidents reported within a month. The latest attempted theft occurred at Danteshwari Temple in Bajaj Nagar, where two men were caught trying to break into the donation box.
On March 27, around 3:00 PM, complainant Pankaj Vilasrao Maske (39) noticed the suspects attempting to steal from the temple’s donation box. Acting quickly, he locked the temple’s main gate and alerted the Bajaj Nagar Police. The accused, identified as Manthan Hansraj Phulzhele (22) and Manish Dharam Balgawani (22), both residents of Balaji Nagar, Manewada Road, were apprehended. Police have registered an FIR under Sections 305(3) and 62 of the BNS, and further investigations are ongoing.
Repeated Temple Burglaries Spark Security Concerns
This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of temple thefts in Nagpur. Earlier this month, on March 4, thieves targeted Shiv Mandir in Gittikhadan, breaking in and stealing cash and valuables. The crime was captured on CCTV, and devotees have since filed a complaint with Gittikhadan Police.
Another shocking case occurred at Shri Shitalnath Digambar Jain Temple in Juni Shukrawari, where burglars stole five silver idols, 12 thrones, a silver umbrella, and ₹2 lakh in cash from the donation box. The thieves specifically took high-denomination notes, suggesting a well-planned heist.
Are Temples Becoming Easy Targets for Thieves?
The rising number of thefts at temples has left devotees demanding better security measures. Many believe that the lack of surveillance, night security, and strict safeguards makes temples vulnerable. Police are now urging temple authorities to install CCTV cameras, appoint security guards, and reinforce safety measures to prevent further incidents.
As investigations into these thefts continue, authorities emphasize the need for enhanced security to protect religious sites and sacred assets across Nagpur.
