With the rainy season increasing the chances of electric shocks and accidents caused by current leakage through wires, walls, or faulty appliances, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has asked people to take extra care. The company is urging everyone to install circuit breakers in homes, shops, and other places to avoid such dangers and protect both lives and property.
In a recent advisory, MSEDCL explained that most electrical accidents happen because of poor wiring, leakage of current, or not having proper safety devices like circuit breakers and earthing systems. That’s why the company is asking citizens to take electrical safety seriously and act before something goes wrong.
MSEDCL has suggested using safety devices like Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs), Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers (ELCBs), or Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCBs) with the correct capacity. These tools help stop electricity immediately if there’s a fault, which can prevent electric shocks or fires. The company also highlighted how important earthing is, as it allows excess electricity to safely pass into the ground.
MSEDCL said that earthing must be included in all new constructions and should be installed right away in older buildings where it’s missing. People are also advised to check their earthing systems every two years to make sure they are working well.
For added safety at home, MSEDCL recommended using electric testers. These small devices cost between ₹20 and ₹50 and can help check if current is leaking into walls, wires, metal objects, fridges, coolers, geysers, or taps. If the tester light glows, that means the object has live current and should not be touched.
The advisory also suggested that people wear rubber or plastic slippers while using electrical appliances in wet areas. Also, metal pipes or agricultural pump enclosures should be checked before touching them.
“Electric safety is not just a personal responsibility—it’s a social one,” MSEDCL stated. “By ensuring proper installation of circuit breakers and regular inspection of earthing, people not only protect themselves but also safeguard their families and communities from preventable tragedies. This collective awareness and action can significantly reduce electrical accidents.”
As the monsoon continues, MSEDCL’s message serves as a timely reminder to follow basic safety steps and prevent accidents caused by electricity.
