In a significant step towards acknowledging the efforts of snake rescuers (Sarpamitras), especially in rural Maharashtra, the state government has announced that they will soon be issued official identity cards and provided accident insurance coverage of ₹10 lakh.
Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule made the announcement during a review meeting held at Mantralaya. He noted that the long-pending demand to formally recognise the contribution of Sarpamitras in preventing snake-bite incidents is finally being addressed.
“These rescuers often risk their lives to safely remove snakes from human habitats. It’s time their work receives institutional recognition,” Bawankule stated, adding that a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will also be introduced to ensure effective implementation of the insurance scheme.
A proposal will also be sent to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, recommending that Sarpamitras be declared ‘essential service providers’ and granted the status of ‘frontline workers’.
Present at the meeting were Milind Mhaiskar, Additional Chief Secretary (Forests), M Srinivas Rao, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), and Sambhaji Patil, President of the All-India Snake and Wildlife Rescuers’ Association.
To improve transparency and coordination, the Forest Department is set to launch a dedicated portal featuring verified information about registered snake rescuers. The database will help the public access nearby Sarpamitras in emergencies, streamlining wildlife rescue efforts.
Welcoming the initiative, renowned rescuer Swapnil Bodhane said, “This is a long-awaited and encouraging move by the government. However, the Sarpamitra community still seeks clarity on how the initiative will be rolled out and managed.”
The government’s proposed measures aim to offer safety assurance, logistical support, and official recognition to Sarpamitras, who play a crucial role in wildlife protection and public safety. Officials also underlined the importance of incorporating their services into the state’s disaster response framework.
