Nagpur: A delegation from the Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) met Tejrao Pacharne, Additional Commissioner of the State GST Department, on Thursday and submitted a memorandum demanding the abolition of profession tax in Maharashtra.
NVCC President Arjundas Ahuja highlighted that the profession tax system adds unnecessary complications to the existing tax framework. He pointed out that the profession tax process—similar to GST—requires separate registration, monthly or annual returns, and assessments, thereby increasing the compliance burden on businesses and professionals.
Citing examples from other states, Ahuja noted that Delhi and Haryana have already scrapped profession tax through their GST departments, and Maharashtra should follow suit.
The NVCC delegation included Vice Presidents Farooqbhai Akbani and Swapnil Ahirkar, Secretary Sachin Puniyani, PRO CA Hemant Sarda, Indirect Tax Committee Convenor CA Ritesh Mehta, along with Jaiprakash Parekh and Narayan Toshniwal.
