In a major policy decision addressing a long-standing demand, Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil has announced that the retirement age for principals of colleges in the state will be increased from 62 to 65 years.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the 40th annual state-level convention of the Akhil Maharashtra Federation of Principals of Non-Government Colleges, held at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Auditorium in Amravati.
The event was organised by the Shri Shivaji Education Society under the leadership of Harshavardhan Deshmukh, who presided over the function. The convention witnessed the presence of several eminent dignitaries, including Dr. Anil Sahastrabudhe, Chairman of NAAC and the National Educational Technology Forum; Dr. Milind Barhate, Vice Chancellor of Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University; Dr. Atul Vaidya, Vice Chancellor of Laxminarayan Innovation and Technology University, Nagpur; MLC Kiran Sarnaik; Director of Higher Education Dr. Shailendra Dewalankar; and Joint Director Dr. Keshav Tupe.
Also present were Anil Rao, a member of the NEP 2020 Steering Committee; Dr. Abasaheb Deshmukh, President of the Federation; Vice President Principal Nandkumar Nikam; and Secretary Dr. Sudhakar Jadhavar.
While addressing the gathering, Minister Patil stressed the significance of the New Education Policy (NEP), which focuses on promoting research, mother-tongue-based education, vocational training, and traditional Indian knowledge systems. He noted that principals and teachers will play a pivotal role in bringing these reforms to life and highlighted the need to understand the policy not just technically but also in its human and educational context.
Patil also took a dig at critics of the education policy, stating that many comment without sufficient understanding. He further underlined that there had been no major recruitment of professors in the past two decades and credited the current government for initiating the long-overdue process. He confirmed that 5,500 new professors will be appointed soon, with the recruitment process already in progress.
