Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has informed the High Court that stray dogs have bitten 1,500 people in the city in the last seven months. This disclosure was made in an affidavit filed by the NMC in response to a public interest litigation concerning the stray dog menace.
According to the affidavit, a total of 4,601 anti-rabies injections were administered in the past seven months to dog-bite victims. NMC officials stated that this figure reflects the growing problem of stray dogs targeting residents.
4,601 Anti-Rabies Vaccinations Administered
The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court is hearing a PIL filed by Vijay Talekar and Manzoor Shakwar over the rising threat posed by stray dogs in the city. The court has directed NMC and the police to take timely and effective measures to address the issue.
The civic body informed the court that anti-rabies injections are being used in large numbers, highlighting the severity of the problem. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, 4,601 people required vaccination after dog bites. Currently, 471 anti-rabies vaccines are available in hospitals, while the central medical store has 2,100 vaccines in stock.
Senior advocate Firdos Mirza is representing the petitioners, while NMC is represented by advocate Sudhir Puranik.
