The Union Cabinet has approved a bill to regulate online gaming, which is expected to be introduced in the Lok Sabha tomorrow, sources said. The proposed legislation aims to bring online gaming platforms under a uniform legal framework and impose strict penalties for gambling through digital apps.
Key Provisions
The draft law highlights concerns over addiction, fraud, and varying state regulations, seeking to establish consistency across the country. It also proposes provisions for penalties and punishments against violators.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is likely to be designated as the central regulator to oversee the sector.
Ban on Online Betting
The bill also seeks to prohibit online betting altogether. Under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS), unauthorised betting already carries a seven-year prison term and a fine.
If passed, the law would mark the first centralised framework for regulating India’s rapidly growing online gaming industry.
