OpenAI has introduced a new subscription tier, ChatGPT Go, in India, priced at ₹399 per month. The plan aims to provide wider access to popular features such as higher usage limits, image generation, file uploads, and extended memory—at a significantly lower cost compared with the company’s Plus plan.
Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said India is the first country to get access to the Go plan before it is expanded globally. He noted that affordability and local payment options were among the biggest requests from Indian users. The new tier addresses this by offering 10× more messages, 10× more image generations, 10× more file uploads, and double the memory length compared with the free version. This makes it a practical option for students, freelancers, and professionals who often find the free plan limiting but may not require the full benefits of the Plus or Pro subscriptions.
In addition to the new tier, OpenAI has shifted to INR pricing across all subscription plans in India, eliminating the confusion of currency conversions. For the first time, the company has also enabled UPI payments, making upgrades more convenient and accessible for a larger user base.
Currently, ChatGPT offers four subscription levels: the free plan with restricted access, the new Go plan at ₹399, the Plus plan at ₹1,999, and the Pro plan at ₹19,999. The Go tier is positioned as a middle ground between the free and Plus versions, offering users more breathing space at an affordable rate.
The India-first rollout reflects OpenAI’s strategy to strengthen the adoption of generative AI in cost-sensitive markets by introducing flexible, locally relevant options. It also signals a move to make AI tools more inclusive—not just for enterprises and premium users, but also for students, creators, and individuals relying on ChatGPT for learning, productivity, and creative projects.
