Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday once again urged citizens to prioritize indigenous or ‘swadeshi’ products, just two days before the Trump administration’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods come into effect on August 27.
Speaking at an event in Ahmedabad, PM Modi asked shopkeepers to display ‘swadeshi boards’ outside their establishments during the upcoming festive season. He said the festivals—Navratri, Vijayadashami, Dhanteras, Diwali—should celebrate Indian culture and self-reliance.
“Whatever we buy should be ‘Made in India’, indigenous products. I appeal to citizens to prioritize such goods, whether decorative items or gifts. I also urge business owners to refrain from selling imported items. These small but impactful steps can drive our nation’s progress and prosperity,” the Prime Minister said.
He further emphasized that traders should display a prominent board outside their shops stating that they sell only ‘swadeshi’ goods. “Let these festivals open doors to prosperity. Swadeshi and Aatma-nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) is the highway to Viksit Bharat (developed India). Focus on improving quality and reducing prices of your products,” he added.
PM Modi also assured that he would not compromise on the interests of farmers, cattle rearers, and small-scale industries, acknowledging that international pressure may increase but India will withstand it.
Without naming any country, the Prime Minister noted that global politics today largely revolves around economic interests, highlighting the need for self-reliance while invoking the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi.
