Government contractor P.V. Verma alias Munna Verma was found hanging at his residence in Rajnagar on Monday morning, in an apparent suicide. Although no suicide note was recovered, the police seized his mobile phone, and its call detail records (CDR) are being examined.
Verma had been under severe financial stress for the past 10 days. On Sunday, he was reportedly upset and had told close associates that he might not survive further. Later that evening, after having dinner at 9 pm, he returned home and retired for the night. On Monday morning, his body was discovered by a watchman who had closed the main gate the previous night.
Most of Verma’s contracts were related to road construction in Nagpur. He also owned two hot mix plants in Nagpur and another in Deori. Many of his contracts were sub-contracted. For the past two years, Verma had been struggling with debts exceeding ₹40 crore. Despite completing projects, his bills were not cleared by the government, leaving him unable to repay loans.
Following his death, panic spread among contractors across the city. The Contractors Association has alleged that government apathy and delayed payments pushed Verma to take this extreme step. Families of other contractors fear a similar fate if dues remain unpaid.
Police sources revealed that Verma was in touch with 8–10 people until late Sunday night, and all will be questioned. His CDR and phone data will help establish the sequence of events and clarify if he was being harassed or pressured by anyone.
Despite the magnitude of the incident, no senior government official has yet visited Verma’s residence, raising questions about the administration’s accountability.
