Security across the city has been stepped up after Mumbai Traffic Police received a threat message on their official WhatsApp number, warning of multiple terror attacks.
Police said the message claimed that 34 vehicles had been rigged with “human bombs” and threatened that the blasts would “shake the entire Mumbai.”
As Mumbai police ramped up security for Anant Chaturthi, the 10th day of the Ganesh festival, the traffic police control room received a threat message on Thursday, an official told the news agency.
He added that the Crime Branch has launched a probe into the threat, while the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and other agencies have also been alerted. The message claimed to be from an organisation calling itself Lashkar-e-Jihadi and alleged that 14 Pakistani terrorists had entered India.
The threat message also warned that 400 kg of RDX would be used in the attacks.
Mumbai gears up for Ganeshotsav finale
With the city set to witness the grand finale of the 10-day Ganesh festival this Saturday, police have intensified security measures to handle the lakhs of devotees expected to throng the streets.
An official said security has been tightened at sensitive locations, with combing operations underway to prevent any untoward incidents. Authorities are also probing the source of the suspicious message that surfaced during the festival period.
Police have urged citizens not to fall for rumours and to report any suspicious activity immediately, assuring that all measures are in place to ensure a safe and peaceful celebration.
