As many as 176 pharmacy colleges in Maharashtra, including 42 in the Nagpur region, are facing the threat of de-recognition for not complying with the prescribed requirements for conducting the degree and diploma courses.
The Directorate of Technical Education has issued list of such colleges. The colleges were also issued notices in the month of August.
The list includes 27 colleges in the Mumbai region, 14 conducting degree courses, and 13 diploma courses. Fifteen colleges in the Thane district have been listed for the deficiencies. The number of colleges in other regions include – Palghar – 5, Raigad – 3, Ratnagiri – 3, Sindhudurg – 1, Pune – 21, Nashik – 16, Amravati – 6, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar – 60, and Nagpur – 42.
The deficiencies include adequate fire safety measures and equipment, laboratories, teaching and non-teaching staff, documents relating to the utility of the space, etc, as prescribed by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).
The number of pharmaceutical sciences colleges increased during the 2022-2023 and 2024-2025 academic years, during which 92 degree and 220 diploma colleges were sanctioned in Maharashtra. Out of the 92 degree colleges, 48 colleges, and out of 220 colleges conducting diploma courses, 128 lack the facilities as required by the PCI.
