Nagpur: A major accident on the Mankapur flyover early Friday morning left at least five students from Bhavan’s Koradi Road branch seriously injured when their school van rammed into an oncoming bus.
The crash occurred on the descending slope of the flyover, where traffic has been forced into a two-way flow on a single lane for months due to ongoing repair work on the damaged stretch between Mankapur Stadium and Faras.

Eyewitnesses rushed to help, pulling the children out of the mangled vehicle and carrying them to a nearby hospital. Only two of the students were conscious when rescued, while the others were found unconscious inside the van. One of the conscious children recalled hearing a loud crash before losing awareness. Parents of some students reached the spot soon after the accident.
The van driver, who suffered severe head and abdominal injuries after being struck by the steering wheel, was also admitted to hospital. Doctors confirmed that while several of the injured are in critical condition, no fatalities have been reported so far.
The bus involved in the collision, belonging to Narayana Vidyalam, Bokhara, was en route to pick up students. Its driver and two female attendants escaped unharmed. The bus driver claimed the van driver was speeding and suddenly swerved into their lane, resulting in the head-on collision.
Traffic movement on the flyover was disrupted for nearly an hour, with no traffic police present at the scene initially. The slow progress of repair work on the Mankapur flyover—especially over the Ring Road section—has already caused significant inconvenience to commuters, and Friday’s accident once again highlighted the risks of the narrowed carriageway.
