Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has once again come under fire — this time for building a modern smart toilet inside the Ambazari crematorium. What officials call a “civic upgrade” has been branded by locals as nothing short of absurd.
From the outside, the yellow-and-grey toilet block looks impressive. But step closer and you’re greeted by the stench of burning flesh, diesel smoke from the cremation machine, and open views of funeral pyres. “Who in their right mind would walk into a crematorium just to use a toilet?” asked Rekha Joshi of Corporation Colony. “Unless someone is here for a funeral, no one will go in. It’s a waste.”
Residents are furious that crores were spent on a facility that hardly anyone will use. “For how many people was this built? A handful attending funerals,” said Vijay Shah. “The same money could have finished the retaining wall work on Nag Nallah which thousands need.”
The angriest voices are from NIT swimming pool visitors, just a few meters away. “Every day dozens of us come here. We begged for toilets,” said swimmer Ravi Pande. “Instead they build one inside a crematorium? Walking past burning pyres and smoke? It’s insulting.”
Another visitor, Priya Khandekar, added: “You can literally see bodies burning. The smell makes you sick. And NMC thinks this is a public toilet? This is madness.”
For citizens, the Ambazari smart toilet is not progress — it’s proof of how tone-deaf civic planning has become.
